Electronystagmography

At St. Rita’s Medical Center, the Audiology department offers several outpatient services to help manage and determine the health of your ears and hearing. In particular, electronystagmography is a series of tests where a licensed audiologist evaluates both the balance and hearing of patients age five and older.

What You Should Know

If you are scheduled to take the electronystagmography test, you should arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment and check in with Outpatient Registration. This area is located on the first floor of the Medical Center behind the Information Desk in the main lobby. The test will take approximately 90 minutes and patients should have someone accompany them to the test.

Also, you should be aware of the following:
  • All cerumen (wax) must be removed from the ear canal.
  • Do not take any medications that would alter the central nervous system for 48 hours before the test (unless otherwise instructed by your physician). These medications include:
    • Sleeping Agents
    • Antihistamines
    • Tranquilizers
    • Nerve Pills
    • Pain Pills
    • Diet Pills
    • Allergy Medications
  • You cannot consume any alcohol for 24 hours before the test.
  • Also, avoid caffeine and smoking the day of the test.
  • Eat a light meal three hours before the test.
  • Cosmetic makeup should not be applied the day of the test.
During the test, the audiologist will assess your ear and hearing. If a recent audiogram and tympanogram have been completed, the results should be forwarded to Audiology. If recent tests have not been completed, these two tests will be done.

Eye movement is recorded through electrodes placed around each eye. The patient is asked to perform several tasks including following a light, lying and sitting with their eyes both opened and closed. Lastly, the patient’s ears are filled with warm water, followed by cool water, to look at the ear’s response to stimulation. The patient may feel dizzy during this part of the test.

After the test is completed, a comprehensive report with the audiologists’ impressions and recommendations will be sent to the referring physician.
