St. Rita’s employs approximately 40 full-time and part-time social workers working inside and outside the Medical Center. Social workers are part of the care team and work alongside patients, doctors, nurses and other allied health professionals to provide support where it may be needed. Some social workers focus on specialty areas such as oncology and dialysis, while others work with specific age populations such as children or the elderly.
Social workers interview the patient and family members to discuss concerns about adjustments to illness and/or hospitalization. They try to identify needs early so the best plan of discharge can be arranged. Social workers frequently work with home care services and long term care facilities for discharge planning. Social workers also help people overcome some of life’s difficult challenges like addiction, loss of loved ones, unemployment, poverty issues, mental illness and disability.
