Pulmonary Function Lab Overview

St. Rita’s Pulmonary Function Lab provides comprehensive testing for patients with respiratory or breathing problems. Pulmonary (lung) function tests measure how effective the lungs work. These tests provide information about the amount of air a person’s lungs can hold and how quickly a patient can move air in and out of the lungs. Tests performed in the Pulmonary Function Lab can be used to diagnose breathing disorders such as: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Chronic Bronchitis, Emphysema, Asthma, Cystic Fibrosis and other respiratory diseases. After the diagnosis of a respiratory disorder, pulmonary function tests can be used to monitor a patient’s response to treatment. Sometimes these tests are ordered prior to surgery to determine if a patient has a breathing problem that could interfere with post-operative healing.

Tests performed in the Pulmonary Function Lab are ordered by a physician, conducted by Respiratory Care Practitioners (RCP) and evaluated by a pulmonologist, a physician specializing in lung disorders, who shares the results with the patient’s physician.
