Ventilator Management

At St. Rita's, our caring team of respiratory therapists work closely with your physician to manage your ventilator offering you the best healthcare available. When patients cannot breathe on their own, a mechanical ventilator is necessary to keep the patient alive and is vital to their healing and positive outcome.

The St. Rita's team of Certified Respiratory Therapists (CRT) and Registered Respiratory Therapists (RRT), or Respiratory Care Practitioners (RCP) offer these inpatient services. This team helps to determine the appropriate ventilator settings for each patient. They also help to determine the number of breaths per minute as well as the oxygen and volume of air intake. When patients have had time to recover, the RCP team will help to "wean" or take them off of the ventilator in a manner that will improve their medical condition.

Vent weaning is termed used by healthcare professionals when a patient is being taken off of breathing assistance from a ventilator. It requires diligent care from professionals and the help of the patient and family members.
