At St. Rita's
Medical Center, the Audiology department offers several outpatient services
to help manage and determine the health of your ears and hearing. In particular,
otoacoustic emission (OAE) tests for cochlear function in patients birth
through older adults.
If
you are scheduled to take the OAI, you should arrive approximately 30 minutes
before your scheduled appointment and check in with Outpatient Registration.
This area is located on the first floor of the Medical Center behind the
Information Desk in the main lobby. The test will take approximately 15
minutes.
During the test, a small probe is placed in your ear canal and two different
tones are sent out from the probe. A healthy and properly functioning
cochlear will "echo" a response to the different tones. If a response
is not given, the cochlear function is questioned. Usually this test is
used in conjunction with other tests to evaluate the entire auditory system.
After the test is completed, a comprehensive report with the audiologists'
impressions and recommendations will be sent to the referring physician.
A physician's order is required. Orders can be faxed to Cardiopulminary
Services at (419) 226-9535 or sent to the test with you.
