Wheelchair Evaluations

Who can benefit from a wheelchair evaluation?
For persons confined to wheelchairs, it is important the chair fit the person physically as well as functionally. If you are presently in a wheelchair and it causes discomfort of any kind or limits activities you should be able to do in a wheel chair, an evaluation may benefit you.

What happens during a wheelchair evaluation?
During the evaluation, a physical therapist will assess your needs physically and functionally with a representative from a wheelchair vendor. If you have a vendor you already use, we will work with them to make sure your chair matches your needs. Based upon your physical condition, lifestyle and special requests, a chair with the appropriate features will be designed with your input.

After you receive your wheelchair, our therapist and the vendor will meet with you to ensure the chair fits and works appropriately.

Why come to St. Rita's for a wheelchair evaluation?
St. Rita's provides skilled and experienced therapists and can work with a wheelchair vendor to ensure the best service and product.

How can I receive a wheelchair evaluation?
Speak with your physician about your wheelchair needs to help decide whether an evaluation is medically necessary. If you and your physician agree that a wheelchair evaluation is necessary, your physician can provide you with a prescription and contact us for an appointment. We will contact your insurance company to verify whether your insurance will cover this service.

When speaking with a person in a wheelchair, remember to speak at eye level with the person. If you are having a long conversation, consider pulling a chair next to the wheelchair. Never lean on a wheelchair, as that might cause an imbalance and lead to a spill.
