Vestibular rehabilitation is an exercise program that can decrease dizziness
and imbalance, improve safety and increase activity levels. Special tests are
performed by an audiologist to determine if you can benefit from this treatment.
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is a condition where calcium crystals
collect in the inner ear and can cause experiences of vertigo with changes
in body position, such as turning over in bed. Also, a person can experience
weaknesses in the muscle and structures of the inner ear which can cause dizziness
and instability even when you are not moving.
There are four pieces for successful vestibular treatment:
- Repositioning Maneuvers: This technique is used primarily
for BPPV. This treatment involves teaching you a series of body repositioning
exercises.
- Balance Retraining: This type of treatment is often necessary
when there is vestibular weakness. The treatment involves standing and sitting
on uneven surfaces and using visual inputs to challenge the inner ear to
work more effectively.
- Visual Motor Exercises: These techniques are used with
either condition and are designed to improve the coordination of eye and
head movements.
- The Right Therapist: Vestibular problems require specialized
care, like the care found at St. Rita's.
Let St. Rita's put the pieces together for you.

What Is Vestibular:
|
The vestibular and hearing systems are intimately connected in a part of the body called the inner ear. Vestibular refers to a part of chamber, central area, within the inner ear called a vestibule. Patients experiencing dizziness may have a problem in the inner ear. Special tests are available to help healthcare professionals determine if a problem exists.
