Lymphedema

What is Lymphedema?
Lymphedema is a blockage of the lymph vessels resulting in the accumulation of fluids and chronic swelling of the arms, legs or other body parts. Lymphedema can affect infants, children, women and men of all ages. If left untreated the symptoms of lymphedema will worsen.

What causes Lymphedema?
Lymphedema can be caused by genetic factors which, lead to malformations or blockages in the lymphatic system. The problem can surface at any age but does affect more women than men. Lymphedema can also be caused by damage to the lymphatic system secondary to infection, surgery, radiation therapies or other types of traumas.

What are the components of successful treatment?
There are five pieces to successful lymphedema treatment:

  • Manual Lymph Drainage: This is a gentle manual treatment performed on the surface of the skin to help move fluids through the Lymph System.
  • Compression Bandaging: Every patient is taught how to use wraps on effected body parts to prevent fluids from building back up.
  • Exercise: While wearing the compression bandages you are taught how to do exercises which further improve the circulation in the lymph system.
  • Skin and Nail Care Education: Persons with lymphedema are more likely to develop skin and nail infections. For instance we teach people to use a low pH, lanolin lotion which, decrease the incidence of skin cracks which can lead to infection.
  • Progression to Home Management: When beginning treatment you will be seen daily but as you progress in your care you will be taught how to manage this condition at home.
Let St. Rita's put the pieces together for you.

Lymphedema:
If you have lymphedema, talk to your doctor or healthcare professional about an I.D. bracelet or necklace that alerts medical personnel about your condition. This will alert medical personnel not to attempt injections, IV insertions or other invasive procedures to the afflicted extremities.
