When facing a breast biopsy, women have advanced technology at St. Rita's
that allows the procedure to be minimally invasive—meaning no surgery. Breast
biopsy helps physicians identify and diagnosis breast lumps or masses, even
at the earliest stages. A system called Mammotome allows physicians to perform
breast biopsies in an outpatient setting under local anesthesia. Using digital
imaging (stereotactic) to confirm placement, the physician will insert a Mammotome
probe, through a small incision in the breast, and gently collect tissue samples
using a vacuum process. Because the Mammotome probe is directional, multiple
samples can be collected without having to remove and reinsert the device.
Patients can expect the entire procedure to take less than an hour with minimal
discomfort and little recovery time. Mammotome is also used in an ultrasound
breast biopsy, where ultrasound guides the placement of the Mammotome probe.
Both Stereotactic Biopsy with Mammotome and Ultrasound Biopsy with Mammotome
can be performed on an outpatient basis. To learn more about breast biopsy
