According health experts, sedentary lifestyles and large food portions are
to blame for our nation's childhood obesity epidemic. To help with this growing
problem, St. Rita's offers a six-month program for obese children who want
to make lifestyle changes for healthier living. The program, Healthy Eating
and Exercise Program for Kids, designed for children 7 to 17 years of
age, meets once each week for two hours. A parent must come to each session
with their child to support them and reinforce the healthy lifestyle techniques
at home. The comprehensive program covers issues such as exercise, eating choices
and the psychological aspects of low esteem often associated with childhood
obesity. A team of health professionals including a physician, nurses, registered
dieticians, exercise physiologists and psychologists help the young participants
learn the tools they need to avoid health conditions associated with obesity,
such as Type II diabetes, high blood pressure and orthopedic disorders.
The program uses a fun format including games for learning about food choices
and practicing a variety of exercises and stretches. Participants may practice
abdominal crunches, ride stationery bikes or jump rope as they learn the importance
of exercise in healthy living.
A pediatrician referral is needed for children to join the program. The next
program starts in August and costs $100 for the entire six months. For more
information about this program, go to the Pediatrics section of this Web site
