Childbirth Education Programs

Today, more than ever before, parents-to-be are taking time to learn about many facets of childbirth and parenting. The BirthPlace at St. Rita’s offers a variety of programs to meet your needs. All childbirth classes are scheduled through St. Rita’s Call A Nurse at (419) 226-9000 or (800) 437-4827.

Childbirth Education
These classes are designed to help parents-to-be plan with the labor and delivery experience by providing them with the information and knowledge necessary for a successful birth. The classes are taught by St. Rita’s experienced nurses who specialize in childbirth education. Breathing, relaxation and comfort measure, medical interventions and infant care are some of the topics covered. Evening and Saturday dates are available in addition to classes offered at the Putnam County Ambulatory Care Center. You should begin childbirth education classes eight to ten weeks before your baby is due. A tour of The BirthPlace is included.

Childbirth Refresher
Designed for parents with previous childbirth experience including those with prior cesarean deliveries desiring vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC). This one-time class reviews pregnancy, labor and delivery, breathing, relaxation and comfort techniques. Classes should be taken five to six weeks before your baby is due. A tour of The BirthPlace is included.

Teen Childbirth Classes
This class is designed to meet the educational and social needs of young mothers age 19 and younger preparing to have a baby. General labor and delivery education is addressed as well as the special concerns unique to teens. A tour of The BirthPlace at St. Rita’s is also included. Classes should be taken eight to ten weeks before your baby is due.

New Addition Class
Siblings ages three to nine will enjoy this fun, interactive class to help them get ready for their new brother or sister. Siblings learn what to expect from a new baby, safety procedures and how to handle a newborn. This Saturday afternoon class, offered monthly, offers snacks and crafts as well. A tour of The BirthPlace is also included so siblings know where Mom will be when the baby is born.

Bootcamp for New Dads
This Dads-only workshop covers general care and handling of an infant, what to expect from fatherhood and the emotional and physical needs of a new mother. During class, other veteran dads share their experiences of becoming a new father.

Infant Care Class
This class reviews the basic skills and knowledge necessary to care for your healthy newborn.

Breastfeeding Class
This class is designed to help mothers-to-be learn the basics of breastfeeding while preparing them physically and emotionally for the benefits of breastfeeding. This two-hour class is taught by our certified lactation consultants. Evening and weekend classes are available.

For individual educational needs our OB Care Managers are available by appointment.
