Fluoroscopy is a type of x-ray technique that uses a fluoroscope to show deep structures of the body on a fluorescent screen. These x-rays capture a moving image of certain organs while they are functioning. It is often used for studies of the intestinal tract often called (upper or lower) GI series. The patient is usually given a barium drink before the procedure. The barium is used to help outline the tissue so it will show up on the x-ray. After the barium has entered the stomach, a series of images will be captured.
During the imaging process, the patient may be asked to turn from side to side and to hold several different positions, to enable the radiologist or technologist to capture views from several angles.
