This test is completed by having the patient lie on their back on a bed or cart. A sticky patch (electrode) is applied to each ankle and wrist. Six additional patches are applied to the chest area. Additional patches will be applied to the back if an 18 Lead ECG is ordered. A wire is then attached to each patch and electrical activity of the heart is recorded. It takes about 5-10 minutes to attach the patches and run a clear tracing. It may be necessary to shave the patient's hair or abrade the skin in order to optimize the electrical conduction.

What You Should Know
After the test, the documentation is processed and forwarded to the patient's chart. A qualified physician will confirm the correct interpretation. Following that reading, the results will be sent to the ordering and all referring physicians.
