Reflexology Treatment at St. Rita's Medical Center
Reflexology is a complementary therapy used to strengthen and support the body in its own healing process.

This method of treatment applies the principle that there are reflex areas in the feet and hands that correspond to all parts of the body, including glands, organs and total body systems. Stimulating these reflexes can help many health problems in a natural way. The act of applying pressure to reflex areas results in the reduction of stress which promotes positive changes in the body.

Reflexology uses the thumb and fingers to apply both pressure and touch to the body which in turn has an effect on the entire body. It is a unique modality that is different from massage. It can be used to restore and maintain the body's natural well-being and encourage healing.

Reflexology is acknowledged as a safe non-invasive, health practice without contraindications.

Expectations of Reflexology Treatment
On your first visit, there is a preliminary consultation with the reflexologist. The reflexologist will work with gentle pressure (strokes) on your feet or hands. Their trained hands can detect tiny deposits and imbalances in the feet and hands. By working on these points, the reflexologist can release blockages and restore the free flow of energy to the entire body. There may be discomfort in some places. This is an indication of congestion or imbalance in a corresponding part of the body. These strokes will ease tension and improve circulation.

Reflexology sessions in general last from 30 to 50 minutes. The patient must remove only their shoes and socks. Reflexologists will use a special chair.

Reflexology should not be used in place of seeing a physician for medical treatment. The reflexologist is limited to complementing traditional medicine approaches, not replacing them. Their services are provided in addition to treatment from a medical professional.

The patient should feel relaxed at the end of a session. How long that relaxation remains is an indication of the effectiveness of the session. For maximum benefits, it is recommended patients have regular reflexology sessions.

Benefits of Reflexology for Patients
Reflexology is used to support the body in its own healing process, to strengthen the body so it is able to draw upon its own resources to repair and heal itself.

Through stimulation of all the reflex areas of the body, the reflexologist is able to reduce stress and tension to create space in the recipient's body for healing to take place.

Reflexology treats the entire person, not just symptoms of a disease so most patients do find reflexology to be beneficial. This form of therapy brings relief to a wide range of acute and chronic conditions for people of all ages.

How it Works
The human body has the unique capability of healing itself. Following an injury, illness, stress or disease, the body is in a state of "imbalance" that does not allow the body to function effectively. Reflexology is used to restore and maintain the body's natural equilibrium and encourage healing.

Reflexology is designed to stimulate the reflex areas of the feet and hands which in turn relax and rejuvenate the body and body systems. By relaxing the body, tension is relieved and the circulation of blood and lymph is returned to its natural flow allowing the body to function more efficiently.

This gentle therapy encourages the body to heal itself at its own pace. While relaxing the patient, it will also stimulate the body's own automatic healing mechanisms.

Cost
Most insurance companies do not reimburse for the cost of reflexology; however, reflexology is offered affordably by St. Rita's Medical Center. The reflexologist and patient will determine the length of the session. A physician's referral is not required.

Your Reflexologist
All reflexologists at St. Rita's are trained and fully certified by the International Institute of Reflexology (IIR). Each reflexologist has been thoroughly trained how to assess the feed and hands, as well as body conditions and functioning. They have spent hours perfecting the techniques used based on the patient's condition and techniques for manipulating the hands and feet.
