CHIPS Program

In 1997, the federal government addressed the issue of uninsured children. With the passage of the Balanced Budget Act, $40 billion in federal matching funds were made available to states that wanted to expand children’s health insurance coverage. Ohio implemented CHIPS (Children’s Health Insurance Program) designed to assist and advocate for low-income, uninsured families in obtaining the necessary documentation to secure health insurance coverage through the Healthy Start/Healthy Families initiative. To date more than 1,000 families and children have been assisted by St. Rita’s CHIPS coordinator.

The program is coordinated out of St. Rita’s MED-CARE Health Clinic. The clinic helps care for area families with limited incomes, no health insurance and no family physician.
