A pharmacy technician assists in daily activities within a pharmacy and is under
the direct supervision of a pharmacist. Duties of a pharmacy technician include:
interpreting physician orders, entering prescriptions into the computer, preparing
prescriptions by doing such things as counting and weighing medications, maintaining
pharmacy inventory, labeling prescriptions, communicating with insurance companies,
and developing and maintaining patient files. In a hospital setting, a pharmacy
technician may also be responsible for distributing medications, IV solutions,
floor stock and controlled substances to patient care areas. Responsibilities
will vary according to various state regulations.
Pharmacy technicians generally work in pharmacies that can be located in hospitals,
nursing homes, grocery stores, department stores, drug stores, etc. Pharmacy
technicians may also work for drug manufacturers.
In the state of Ohio, this position requires a minimum of a high school
diploma or GED. Pharmacy technicians usually learn through on-the-job training.
However, there are some formal educational programs that individuals may attend.
Certification as a pharmacy technician is optional, although many companies may
prefer or require individuals to become certified. In order to become certified,
individuals must pass a national examination administered by the
